Getting
a short-term job for Christmas can do more than
just bring you extra cash.
You’ll
gain experience that may help you in your career.
Here’s the kind of story young people tell:
I
was wondering about going to college to study
hospitality. I thought someday I’d like
to run a bar or a hotel. But I didn’t
really know what it involved.
I
got a Christmas job waiting in a restaurant.
It was hectic with all the Christmas parties,
but I found I enjoyed it when it was really
busy.
My
boss said I coped really well with the rush
and promised to give me a great reference. In
the quieter moments I had time to ask her lots
of things about working in hospitality.
Now
I knew I wanted that college place – and
I had the work experience to show my interest
was real.
Getting
the right Christmas job
Don’t
leave it too late! Businesses start taking on
extra staff early
Spend
time thinking about where you’d like to
work:
Where
will give you the hours and the pay you need?
Where
will get you the experience, the references and
the contacts you want?
Where
will have a good atmosphere to work in?
Approach
the businesses you’re interested in –
don’t wait for them to advertise.
Remember,
there are seasonal jobs at other times of year
– for instance in the summer.
But
can you look cool in a Santa hat?
That’s
another question!
But
you can contact a tutor if you’d like to
talk about seasonal work.
